Raising a child with a genetic disorder like hemophilia is a significant challenge that impacts the entire family. To help families successfully live with the challenges of a bleeding disorder, the Parents Empowering Parents (PEP) program is designed to educate parents and improve confidence in parenting skills. It is designed for the parents of children with bleeding disorders ages 0 to 11 years old. The program is presented to parents by parents of children with bleeding disorders, in tandem with social workers and nurses. This team approach and shared teaching responsibility combines the strengths of peer support with professional expertise. The peer-to-peer element of the program has set PEP apart and has been fundamental to its success. PEP fosters a supportive environment that allows parents to meet other parents and caregivers, share personal experiences, offer advice and make new friends. These relationships continue long after the formal PEP sessions have ended, and often grow into lifelong friendships, providing an important support network to these parents. The goals of PEP include: increasing the parents’ understanding of the child’s bleeding disorder; providing the parents with the skills necessary to effectively parent the child at the earliest age possible; heightening the parents’ ability to respond objectively and consistently to bleeding episodes; and enhancing the therapeutic relationship between parent, child and treatment staff. PEP topics include: the impact of bleeding disorders on child development; understanding and dealing with frustrations, anger, and other feelings; compassionate discipline; behavior management skills; building self-esteem and confidence; parenting styles; and parent/family communication. The Louisiana Comprehensive Hemophilia Care Center is preparing to initiate two Parents Empowering Parents (PEP) weekend parenting groups. One will be held in New Orleans June 29-July 1, 2007 and the other will be held in Lafayette October 5-7th, 2007. The PEP program is funded by a grant that covers all the expense for the participants including lodging, food, travel, and babysitting costs to the families. If you are a parent of a child with a bleeding disorder age 0 to 11 years old, have not attended PEP in the past, and would be interested in attending one of this year’s two PEP weekend groups; please call: Sue du Treil or Jennifer Buttell 504-988-5433
